Joey Iannetta

About Me

My name is Joey Iannetta and I am currently a rising senior at Furman University. My majors are Computer Science-Mathematics and Music.  Greenville isn't too far from home for me, as I am from Asheville, NC.  In music, I primarily play the trombone and participate in symphonic and orchestral ensembles.  I did, however, take four semesters of voice lessons and participated in Furman Singers for two years.  Last fall I was fortunate enough to study abroad with the Music in Italy program and I absolutely loved it.  Though this trip is only three weeks instead of three months, I’m sure it will be packed full of just as many adventures and stories.

Math and the Mouse

Math and the Mouse is an opportunity that was presented to me while I was studying in Italy.  A faculty member that works in the study away office at Furman came to visit, and he and I got to talking about my majors and he told me about this program.  I was immediately interested (not only to study away again!) because I wanted the opportunity to see how math could apply beyond the text book and have a career other than teaching.  (But also, who doesn’t love Disney?) Being a junior in college, I’ve had to start thinking about the big decisions I’ll have to start making next year: Am I going to graduate school?  If so, for what?  Am I going to work?  Which jobs am I going to apply for? Participating in Math in the Mouse will give me a first-hand perspective of what mathematicians do and give a better understanding of if I do or do not want to pursue something similar.

What I’m looking forward to most during this experience is the chance to speak with the behind the scenes planners from Disney and getting to tour the park with Len Testa (the president of Touring Plans).  Touring Plans creates a foundation to maximize efficiency while at Disney.  Efficiency and effectiveness are two of my favorite objectives in life.

Food

As far as my favorite food is concerned, after living in Italy for three months, I love a good Italian meal!  That being said, I don’t appreciate the Americanized Italian knock offs! (sorry Olive Garden) I really have a broad spectrum of food that I enjoy with the exception of seafood.  After eating a ton of seafood one night I got a stomach bug and haven’t been able to eat it since.  In terms of my favorite American food, I would always take a nice juicy burger over a steak.  I hope that eating at Disney isn’t too difficult.  I’m not always the best cook, but I do enjoy trying!  I think it will be interesting to go shopping for meals and preparing them in our hotel rooms.

Entertainment

As far at the entertainment goes, I’m sure just about anything Disney puts on will draw me in!  Let’s face it; I’m definitely just a kid at heart. One thing that I really hope they are still doing is Fantasmic.  It’s a show that I saw when I was in about sixth grade and had the chance to go to Disney World.  The reason why I feel like I have a connection to this is because my first marching band show was Fantasmic which was when I was in ninth grade.

A ride that I’m really looking forward to is Space Mountain.   I remember that being the first ride I got to ride in sixth grade.  I thought it was the coolest thing ever when the lights went off and the blue lights came on around me.  As a computer geek, I was fascinated by the technology that was all around me.  As a Freshman in college, Furman Singers Tour went to Disney and I remember riding that ride about three times in a row.  It’s currently one of my favorite rides there!

Lastly, Disney World wouldn’t be complete without the fireworks show.  My mother has always called me a pyro-maniac!  No one does them better than Disney!  I love the way they are able to synchronize the fireworks show to the music and make shapes with fireworks.  I haven’t had the opportunity to actually watch the fireworks show since I was in middle school so I don’t remember it too well, but from what I do remember, it was definitely a spectacular event! Overall, I think this trip is going to be a wonderful opportunity and I can’t wait to get there!
